The Problem

The 2025 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count reveals a significant challenge, with an estimated 72,308 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in LA County, and 43,699 in the city of Los Angeles. The count indicates that while the number of sheltered homeless individuals has decreased slightly compared to the previous year, the problem still remains.

In addition to housing insecurity, food insecurity is also a pressing issue. A survey by the USC Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research found that approximately 832,000 households in 2024 struggled to access enough food. The rate was particularly high among low-income individuals and families, with 41% affected. Underemployment is a contributing factor, as many families struggle to make ends meet despite being employed.

These statistics highlight how homelessness, food insecurity, and economic hardship are deeply connected. Addressing these issues requires a holistic approach, including increased support for affordable housing navigation, easier access to food assistance programs, and employment opportunities that provide a living wage.

1 in 4 Angelenos, or approx. 832,000 households experienced food insecurity in 2024.

Minimum wage increased to 16/hr but inflation still stands. The average family must make at least $100,000 a year to live a middle class life.

Homelessness among older adults (65+) increased significantly, by 17% in the past year, with a 36% rise since 2023. Adults (25-64) increased by 10%.
