The Problem
The 2023 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count reveals a significant challenge, with an estimated 75,518 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in LA County, and 46,260 in the city of Los Angeles. The count indicates that while the number of sheltered homeless individuals has remained stable compared to the previous year, the number of unsheltered individuals has increased.
In addition to housing insecurity, food insecurity is also a pressing issue. A survey by the USC Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research found that nearly 37% of low-income individuals and families in the region experienced food insecurity in 2022. Underemployment is a contributing factor, as many families struggle to make ends meet despite being employed.
These statistics highlight the interconnectedness of homelessness, food insecurity, and economic challenges faced by many in the region. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach, including increased support for affordable housing navigation, food assistance programs, and employment opportunities that provide a living wage.
